Mouchel Parkman

The Technology Services Division within Mouchel Parkman is a highly specialised unit that provides technical integrated solutions, also known as Intelligent Transport Systems, to the Highways Agency and other public sector organisations.

A typical project they undertake is the design and integration of the technical interface for Active Traffic Management Systems on motorways. This involves the entire lifecycle from research and design of the systems and infrastructure, right through to project implementation.

The Intelligent Transport Solutions industry is currently experiencing significant growth which has resulted in a skills shortage for people who have direct experience in the industry.

Mouchel Parkman recognised that in order to meet the demands of their clients and the technological developments of the industry, it was essential that they appoint a Business Development Director that understood not only the needs of their clients, but also the technical capability of their consultancy.

As there were only going to be a finite number of people in the industry that would have these skills, Bluefire Executive Search were instructed to carry out an extensive headhunting exercise to ensure that every possible candidate in the industry was approached on a confidential basis.

We not only produced a shortlist of candidates that met the client’s requirements, but we were also able to feedback additional market information and salary recommendations to assist Mouchel Parkman with their decision.

A successful placement was made with an exceptional candidate from a direct competitor.

The candidate has since gone on to make a significant impact on the turnover of the Technology Services Division, with notable success in developing, from scratch, large accounts in the Local Authority Sector including Transport for London. He was also instrumental in the recent identification and acquisition of a software house to further enhance their solutions capability and open up new market sectors.

Russell Jones & Walker

Russell Jones and Walker (RJW) are one of the Top 6 Legal Firms in the UK representing a prestigious client base across a range of areas, from personal injury work to commercial and criminal litigation; employment to defamation and reputation management; and from clinical negligence to family law.

RJW was successful in winning a major contract from a leading Insurance Underwriter to provide legal advice to clients who wished to exercise the option under the Legal Expense Insurance clause common in most home and personal insurance policies. Having not operated in this particular area of the business before, the firm needed to recruit a Legal Expense Insurance Specialist who would be responsible for managing this division and ensuring that advice given to clients was compliant with both industry regulations and the service level agreements set out in the contract with the Insurance Underwriter.

This is a highly specialised position which requires an in-depth technical understanding of the Legal Expense Insurance arena. Due to the specialised nature of the position, most Insurance companies employ only 1-2 people with this level of expertise, meaning there was an extremely narrow field to target potential candidates. This was further exacerbated by the timescales, with the contract due to commence within eight weeks the company needed the successful candidate identified, interviewed and (having served their notice period) in place within this timeframe. Given the average search process takes approximately twelve weeks this was particularly challenging and difficult assignment.

Despite the aforementioned difficulties, Bluefire Executive Search where able to identify and gain the interest of the Head of Legal Expense Insurance for the RAC. Although the candidate had been in his position for ten years, Bluefire managed the process to ensure he started with Russell, Jones and Walker within the timescales required. He now heads up a very successful department of 35 people for the company, and describes the move as “the best decision he has ever made”.
